In all of my trips to Washington, DC I have never toured the monuments at night. My sister said her girls have never seen them at night either, so we had an impromptu girls night. We drove into DC, grabbed a quick bite to eat and then took in the sites. It was a really cool! There were a few other tourists, but not nearly as many as there are on a warm sunny day. The monuments are open 24 hours a day to the public, but they actually have park rangers there to answer questions until 11:30pm.
It was cold and we had a 4 year old with us, so our pace was brisk and we didn't linger long at any particular memorial. The Lincoln Memorial is my favorite and I always well up while reading his inaugural address and his Gettysburg address in such a quietly grand place.
All in all, it was a lovely evening - I'd recommend the night tour if you ever get the chance.

I'd love to go back and experience the sights again. Thanks for the nice post.
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous! I have been through DC, but never had time to go visit the sites. We swear we are going to do that with our kids when they get a bit older. Glad you had a nice evening! :)

Lincolns one of those people, that even if he wasn't as perfect as he's imagined to be, I don't really want to know. People need heroes and he's a pretty good one. His second inaugural is definitely one of the finest pieces of rhetoric ever. Like Emmy, it's high on my list when the kids are a slight but older :-)
ReplyDeleteImpromptu trips rawk!
i have never been to our nation's capital. sounds majectic when you write about it :D
ReplyDeleteI am going to make you so jealous...my daughter lives in Arlington and her 9th story apt faces northeast which means she has this perfect view of the Washignton Monument and the Capitol, etc. I will take a picture when i visit for New Years and post it on my blog :-)
